Church History

Mt. Sinai was founded by Bishop Terry McCaskill, Sr. with the support of his wife, Lady Shelia McCaskill. It was founded on Luke 4:18, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." The foundation of the church was to reach the outcast. The outcasts who are in this world are the Aids victim, prison bound, prostitute, drug dealer, chemical dependent, gang banger, poor, handicapped, illiterate. Also we reach out to all mankind: educated, wealthy, white, black, and cultures so that all will be free from oppression. This ministry was established to have an atmosphere where one would be free to praise God without being judged. The Lord said in Psalm 100:1, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands."

Mt. Sinai's first service was June 28, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. on a very hot day with no air conditioning, but the Spirit was so high that we were drunk in the Spirit. The Lord moved in an awesome way, like on Azusa Street. The people of God were so free and the house filled with so many people. The choir was directed by Rev. Eric Gambrell and they were called the Inspiration Choir. Bishop preached "Be Persuaded in Your Own Mind." The Lord saved many on that night and 75 people joined on that night. The ministry started with 28 people who helped the vision become a reality; they are: Bro. Daryl Atkins, Sis. Darlene Burriss, Dea. Derrick Burriss, Sis. Tracie Burroughs, Dea. Willie Burroughs, Sis. Rose Copeland, Sis. Betty Earle, Rev. Eric Gambrell, Rev. Cynthia Glenn, Sis. Barbara Goolsby Bowens, Sis. Willie Mae Greer, Sis. Rita Jackson, Rev. Silas Kerns, Dea. Henry Kilpatrick, Dea. Marshall Knox, Sis. Shelia McCaskill, Elder Adrian Pitts, Sis. Harriet Steeple, Rev. Samuel White, Sis. Sharon White, Sis. Brenda Wilks, Sis. Barbara Williams, Sis. Cheryl Williams, Dea. George Williams, Sis. Marilyn Williams, Sis. Ernestine Young, Rev. Melvin Young, and Rev. Willie Young.

The Lord has worked in a miraculous way since then. Over 3,000 members have joined this ministry since that time. We are grateful to Rev. Joe Hagood and Sis. Vera Hagood for allowing us to lease-to-buy the building in Pendleton that they built by the Grace of God. It was God's perfect will for us to be in the building that had been built because it was vacant because Rev. Hagood's health would not allow him to continue to be pastor. God allowed Rev. Hagood to sow the seed and led us to water it and God has brought the increase. We will always love and honor the Hagood family for their work and support for this ministry. We were able to purchase the building in 1994, with the help God.

The first two years were not easy for us because ministers in the county had special meetings about us, trying to discredit us, calling us a cult; witchcraft workers rose up against us. One time a snake entered into the Bishop's study where his wife and he were sitting. Something hit him on the leg while he was walking, but it did not hurt him. Wolves came in with sheep's clothing, but no weapon formed against us would prosper. The membership grew to over 500 within two years.

We would go out to the rough communities every Saturday and have block services, tent revivals, and witness on the street. In 1994, we had a great transition in leadership. Don Parker became the Minister of Music and the choir became the Ambassador Choir. The choir and the church continued to grow in the midst of change. In 1997, the Lord led Bishop McCaskill to buy 10 acres of land in LaFrance, South Carolina to build a new church that would seat over 2,000 people. It would have a Day Care, Drug Rehabilitation Center, School, and Aids Clinic. The land was cleared and construction was started, but we had to stop because of legal matters with the land. Delay does not mean denial. Mt. Sinai has come a long way; we have one church in seven locations.

We have won thousands to Christ by being broadcast on WGGS TV; radio stations WPJM, WCCP, the Inspirational Channel, KHVN (Texas), and mission work in Africa. God has blessed this ministry to have over 40 plus ministers birthed from this ministry. God has birthed ten pastors from this ministry, which include Rev. Wilmar Burroughs, Elder Alton Evett, Elder Fred Hill, Rev. Silas Kerns, Elder Kimberly Moore, Elder Melvin Patterson, Elder Adrian Pitts, Rev. Samuel White, Elder Cory Williams, and Rev. Melvin Young. Mt. Sinai has been a model for many churches in the South. When we started airing on television years ago, we were the only black local church on the air. Now many have followed; therefore, we have many black congregations on the air. We started Saturday Night Live! And now many churches are doing it. We started block services and outreach ministries and now many other churches have followed suit. It is good to know others have caught the vision to reach the outcast. We also started the summer program for children, and other churches started this too. We have set a standard for ministry by the grace of God.

Mt. Sinai changed its name from Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in June 2003 to Mt. Sinai World Outreach Ministry to break through the denominational barriers. We did not reject the beliefs of the Baptist Church; God was enlarging our territory to reach all people of color, creed and denomination. Mt. Sinai also was blessed to have a Christian Academy School in 2002, but we had to close it to renovate the school building. The Music Ministry has been blessed over the years; the choir has made three recordings: in 1995 "What's Your Purpose", in 2000 "In the House" and in 2002 "Battle Praise". Our Bible College which started in 2004 with 20 students is also successful, allowing students to gain knowledge in the Word of God. Bishop McCaskill used to preach seven times every Sunday, but now only preaches four times per Sunday because he has set Elders in all locations. The first installation of Elders took place in January 2004. They have all helped the ministry grow by their faithfulness to God and a love for the Bishop's vision.

The year 2006-2007 was a year of shifting. God shifted our ministry from the old to the new. We experienced in the Greenville location moving from the Palmetto Expo Center to its new location on the west side of Greenville, where the ministry is growing by leaps and bounds. We have been blessed with some Elders leaving, walking into their personal vision and new Elders being consecrated to take their place and keep the ministry moving progressively: Elder Dee Henderson and Elder Frances Grate, assisting in the Pendleton location; Elder James Perry in the Greenville location; Elder Donnie Byrd assisting in the Columbia location; Elder Robert McCaskill in the Kings Mountain, NC area and Elder Gracie Hinton in the Charlotte, NC area. We were also blessed this year with six daughters birthed through the ministry who preaches with excellence and anointing: Rev. Alexias Anderson, Rev. Michelle Poole, Rev. Deshaya Williams, Rev. Felicia Roberts, Rev. Qweshanda Mauney and Rev. Andrea Williams. In addition, we were blessed to have sons called to pastor in new vineyards: Rev. Corey Williams, pastors Enoree Baptist Church, Greenville, SC and Rev. Wilmar Burroughs who now pastors Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Anderson, SC.

The shift has truly been a blessing. It has brought us closer together and stirred up new saints to use their gifts. The shift has also brought some back home. Georgia and Greenwood locations have returned to the Pendleton location. Elder Melvin Patterson has transitioned from Greenwood to Spartanburg location as Assistant Pastor; Elder Alton Evett as well as Elder Adrian Pitts have moved back to Pendleton as Assistant Pastors. The ministry will continue to have Bible Study and outreach programs to meet the needs of that area. The church ministry still covers over 50 pastors and ministries in South Africa, India, Kenya and others. We are now "One Church in Five Locations", due to the shift. We thank God for the shift because it is a set back for a set up! Bishop was led to go into this direction to focus more on building the new worship center that will seat over 3000 people. The church is looking to purchase 30 acres of land after some major business transactions will be made to free the church up and move forward.

The ministry has experienced its best year educating ministers. Bible College continues to draw ministers outside the ministry to grow in their calling. The ministry has also experienced more unity among the members and leaders through the shifting. The Lord has shown us his favor in so many ways. We know that through the grace of God, we will complete our assignment this year, to that which is before us.

"For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor, no good thing does he withhold from those who walk in blameless."
